Statue of Jean Calvin (John Calvin) French theologian and protestant reformer
The statue of John Calvin (French: "Jean Calvin", Hungarian: "Kálvin János") is standing on the square named after him, in front of the Calvinist (Reformed) church. It was created by Barna Búza in 2000, for the 4th World Gathering of Hungarian Reformed. Due to the subway station construction from 2007 for some time it was placed temporarily in the courtyard of the nearby Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church.
Wine merchant with a barrel
The 2.4-meter-tall stone and bronze statue of a "Wine Merchant" (in Hungarian "Borárus") is created by Imre Varga in 1983. The front of the stone barrels were decorated with bronze reliefs, but unfortunately for today these are disappeared. Although the name of the square and the sculpture seem to be the same ("Boráros" vs. "Borárus") and both means "wine merchant", the public place didn't get its name after this profession. As usual and too often, in 1875 the Boráros Square is named after a Hungarian politician, János Boráros (1756-1834) was the vice mayor and chief judge of Pest town in the 19th century.
"Ivócsanak" ("Bull's head bowl") metal sculpture
Created by Imre Varga in 1982.
The "Ivócsanak" (literally about "drinking bowl") sculpture represents one item of the Gold Treasure of Nagyszentmiklós, it is the enlarged copy of the bull's head bowl. The sculpture was created by Imre Varga in 1982, it is made of welded copper and chromium steel.
The treasure was found in 1799 at the border of Nagyszentmiklós settlement, which was Hungary at that time (today Romania, the town called Sânnicolau Mare in Romanian), it consists of 23 early-medieval gold vessel (the total of about 10 kg gold!) and the bull's head bowl is a part of it. The original gold drinking bowl is about 10x12 cm in size. The treasure was hidden probably by the Avars, and a Serbian wine-grower found it while ditching. Today the Treasure of Nagyszentmiklós is located in Vienna, it can be seen in the Museum of Fine Arts (in German "Kunsthistorisches Museum").
The sculpture in the Boráros Square is held by a Corinthian column with acanthus leaf decorations, which was originally on the facade of the old National Theater on the Small Boulevard ("Kiskörút"), that was demolished in 1912.
