The promenade was named after the Bengali (Indian) poet and polymath Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941). In 1926 the artist was healed and recovered in Balatonfüred in the Heart Hospital ("Szívkórház") of Balatonfüred, and in memory of this he planted a lime tree (linden tree) here. A legend says that if an old man plants a lime tree he will see when the tree comes into leaf. It may be some truth in it because after the planting the old Rabindranath Tagore lived another fourteen years.

The building of the Cathedral of Vác (in Hungarian "Váci Székesegyház") was the decision of Károly Eszterházy, who was the bishop of Vác and later also bishop of Eger town, where today a square and a university college preserve his name. He had the fence which separated the Hungarian and German inhabitants broken down and had the Konstantin Square made which became the site of the planned cathedral.

Pope Innocent XI (born as Benedetto Odescalchi, 1611-1689) is also known as the "Saviour of Hungary", because he was one of the initiators of the christian Holy League, which helped expulsing the Turks from Hungary after the almost 150 years of occupation. The last pasha of Buda Abdurrahman Abdi "the Albanian" (1616-1686) was killed here on the site of the current statue of the Pope in 1686, during the recapturing of the Buda Castle in 1686.
